Statistics with the TI-84 Plus Calculator

Editorial Reviews

Review
Review of earlier editions for the TI-83 calculators These books allow teachers and students to easily integrate the graphing calculator into teaching and learning mathematics. Each exploration in the book begins with a little piece of mathematical history then, through step-by-step explanation and lists of calculator key sequences, presents such varied topics as finding the roots of an equation, working with parametric equations, and using high-end statistical analysis, such as chi-square frequency function and F distribution. Following the explanation for each exploration are practice exercises for students. A fully worked-out solution to each exercise is included in the answer-key section at the end of each publication. The exercises require higher mental activity than do many high school mathematics textbooks. The easy-to-follow format will quickly cure graphing-calculator phobia. These resources are especially useful for teachers who have never used graphing calculators. They quickly teach the most common functions of the calculator and are correlated to the most common areas of the high school curriculum. These publications are a must for any high school mathematics department that uses TI-83 calculators. The mathematical cartoons are a nice touch throughout both publications. --Terry Kaminski, Grand Centre High School, Cold Lake, AB T9M lV7.

not what I expected1
I was looking for two very specific things when I purchased this book. It doesn't do either of them.

First, I wanted a book that would teach me how to use my calculator in my statistics class. This book seems to be trying to teach statistics, which it doesn't do very well.

Second, I wanted a reference book that I could look up a calculator command and get a similar, but more detailed explanation than I can get from my TI users manual. It's not a reference book at all. It has exercises and investigations which take far too much time to wade through to get the information I need. There are also sections on how to write programs on your calculator which are interesting but again, far too much work for what I'm looking for.

If you're a teacher looking for lab material for a statistics class, this may be a good book for you but it's not a reference manual with directions for using a calculator.

Be Aware!1
Bought because that 3 so-positive comments, but it's not that good. It only offer so-called "shortcuts" for certain types of questions and gives out 10 or more examples on a certain method, which is mostly the same questions, waste of time!

Without a detail review of all topics is ok, but the model tests are not!
Firstly, the answers are not detail enough. For some trick ones, they only give out a line. Or some solution that hard to understand.
Secondly, the answer is full of errors. Some is as stupid as they get the same answer as the choice B but tells you the correct answer is E.

And, half of the book is filled with figures teaching you how to use TIs, which makes me feel like buying another operation booklet! I'd rather get a Barron's or Princeton Review's than this one.

A must for the level 2 math test5
The approach suggested in this book will give you shortcut methods to solve almost half of the questions in CB's math level 2 subhect test. Plus the author has included 10 sample tests as a bonus.

A must for 2C.4
This book helped me especially with the 2C test. 1 less star again for the paper and binding.

The best of three books I've used so Far for AP Statistics5
This text includes all topics necessary for success on the AP exam - I am completing my first year of teaching with this text, and have found it to be an excellent book. The supplemental resource binder for teachers is excellent - it contains sample quizzes, and a short synopsis of what to expect from students encountering this new information for the first time. Lots of activity - based problems and simulations - My hopes for the next edition? The book cover seems to contain some laminate or plastic covering which starts to flake off after much use - a bit annoying- otherwise a very good book.

Wonderful preparation for the AP Stats test!5
This is my second year teaching Advanced Placement Statistics. I greatly appreciated having a clear stats book that followed the AP curriculum and included the Texas Instruments TI-83 calculator built in to the examples and problems. Most AP Stats students do not own statistical software and rely on their TI-83. This book is a thorough introduction to statistics text written for the bright high school student with a TI-83. The problems come from real data giving the students the sense they are doing real statistics and not just crunching numbers. All of the students from my class passed the AP test.
